Hikvision Surveillance System Secures Ontario Car Dealership Using Innovative Off-Grid Platform

April 4, 2018

Hikvision’s IR PTZ dome security cameras and Hikvision NVRs provided solar-powered video surveillance during building renovation

A security system provided by Hikvision USA Inc., a top provider of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and other emerging technologies, and the leading supplier of video surveillance products and solutions, was installed by Hikvision integrator OGSP (Off Grid Surveillance Platforms) to secure a building during the remodeling process for Ajax Hyundai in Ontario, Canada.

Introduction

Ajax Hyundai in Ontario, part of the Drive Auto Group in Canada, had plans to renovate a building down the street from its original location and rebrand the dealership. In the process of reconstruction, walls were opened and wires were cut, and the building lost electricity.

While under construction, the building housed new, unsold vehicles and expensive construction equipment. The renovation process left the interior contents of the dealership vulnerable to theft during the construction process. As a result, Ajax Hyundai needed a surveillance solution that could function independently from the electric grid.

“We have a long working relationship with OGSP, so when we required surveillance during construction, we knew exactly who to call,” said Sean Harris, general manager for Ajax Hyundai. “I have four Hikvision dome cameras installed at my home [that are] paired with Hikvision DVRs, so I’m familiar with the video quality of Hikvision surveillance systems. It’s the unique installation from OGSP that left many of our employees astounded by the engineering feat,” he added.

This type of installation is OGSP’s expertise – surveillance systems that operate off the electrical grid using the sun to power video surveillance and live monitoring equipment.

“There is a big issue in Canada with people trying to steal cable at construction sites and hydro installations, and people will harm themselves because there are live wires. To counter this problem, preventing injuries and even death, and reducing construction site theft, I devised a more diverse system providing greater power with reliable, real-time monitoring, via third parties and superior area coverage,” said Jeff Mcilveen, owner of OGSP

Requirement: Mobile Surveillance System with Panoramic Coverage The building was open for business during the interior renovation, so Ajax Hyundai needed a surveillance system to function as a theft deterrent as well as monitor employee safety and protect equipment and vehicles.

“It was important for us to have a panoramic view of the entire building and surrounding areas,” said Harris. “The off grid surveillance platform placed the Hikvision PTZ security cameras more than 24 feet in the air, so it can capture details from many blocks away.”

Harris adds that the platform looks very “official,” and therefore serves as an effective theft deterrent.

“The surveillance system had to generate enough solar power to operate around the clock, using stored battery power for overnight use, with a generator as a backup power source,” said Mcilveen. Hikvision’s high resolution and PTZ features provided the dealership with live viewing and recorded video in case of an incident.

The assistant service manager checks the cameras every morning when he gets in, and uses Hikvision’s iVMS-4200 app to check in remotely. Staff can review recorded footage and using motion-activated lights, can determine if an event warrants further investigation.

Solution: Solar-Powered Surveillance Equipped with Hikvision PTZ Security Cameras and a Hikvision NVR

Off Grid Surveillance Platforms recommended and installed four Hikvision DS-2DE4A220IW-AE 2MP Network PTZ Dome Camera with 20 times optical zoom, IR Range 150 meters (~490 feet), IP66 rating and IK10 vandal protection.

The PTZ cameras were installed at the top of a 24-foot base, with one camera facing each of the four corners. “I installed the Hikvision PTZ cameras to ensure they were located in the center of a circle, to provide 360-degree coverage and full visibility,” said Mcilveen. “The compact size of Hikvision cameras helps, and I installed the cameras to be stationary and stable even with wind resistance, offering as much coverage as possible while being able to capture details such as license plates,” he added. Hikvision cameras offer performance with compact size and weight, to balance the design.

OGSP also installed a Hikvision Embedded Plug & Play NVR (model no. DS-7604NI-E1) inside of the trailers with a capacity of 3 TB to store up to one month of video recordings.

Results: Panoramic Surveillance and Heightened Security for Building Renovation “Hikvision camera resolution is phenomenal, and it is easy to check in on our cameras using Hikvision’s iVMS-4200 app,” said Harris. “Our staff was pretty impressed with the unique OGSP configuration and kept saying ‘wow, you’ve got to see this thing.’”

Mcilveen added that weather posed a big challenge, with the Ontario area receiving lots of snowfall and temperatures routinely dropping as low as -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit).

“I had to determine how much power the system would need, estimating downtime for winter weather, and snow on solar panels. I visited the site every few days to remove snow from the panels,” said Mcilveen. “The Hikvision PTZ cameras are weatherproof and functioned perfectly in temperatures down to -30 degrees Celsius.”

Hikvision PTZ cameras offer the best details to get results, because they can be adjusted and zoom in with astonishing detail, he added.

The OGSP installation provided 360-degree, panoramic surveillance that doubled as a theft deterrent, while giving the dealership the flexibility to zoom in for further detail, scan recorded video for footage, and check in remotely from Hikvision’s iVMS app via a smartphone or tablet. The system can also be live monitored by central stations 24/7 if required, trespassers can be requested to leave via active bullhorns, and police dispatch can be immediate.

Conclusion

The panoramic OGSP system delivered a solar-powered Hikvision surveillance system to provide added protection and monitoring coverage for the remodel of the new Ajax Hyundai dealership. Weatherproof Hikvision PTZ security cameras were able to withstand the harsh Ontario winter and ensure 24/7 surveillance for the site.

“Hikvision technology offers cost effective solutions that deliver the best image and video quality on the market. The diverse features and quality of the cameras is unmatched,” concluded Harris.

IMPORTANT! This model requires non-standard firmware. Do Not Install standard firmware (e.g. v.4.1.xx) on this model. Doing so will permanently damage your system. You must use custom firmware v.4.1.25 from the iDS-9632NXI-I8/16S product page.

The I-series NVR (such as the DS-7716NI-I4) is one of Hikvision's most popular and feature-rich recorders. As such, many firmware revisions have been introduced over the years to continually ensure the product is compatible with the newest technology available. Due to the many revisions, we recommend that the user closely follows the instructions below in order to reduce the amount of time spent as well as the chance of failure.

Database Optimization and Repair

As more affordable IP cameras are introduced over time with greater video resolution and data sizes, more efficient database management also becomes necessary. The introduction of firmware v4.0 brought about a new database architecture in order to be futureproof.

After upgrading to v4.X, the recorder database will need to be converted and optimized. If you are experiencing issues where playback is expected but not found, make sure "Database Repair" is performed as indicated in the procedures and scenarios below.

Preparing the Upgrade

Before proceeding with upgrade, it is recommended that NVR configuration file is exported from the NVR over the network or on to a local USB drive.

Upgrading from v3.4.92 build 170518 or Older

  1. All recorders must reach v3.4.92 before proceeding further. Upgrading from versions before v3.4.92 directly to any version of v4.X will likely cause the recorder to fail.
  2. If the recorder is already at v3.4.92, a full factory default is highly recommended before upgrading to any version of v4.X. There is a high chance of unit failure (requiring RMA) if the unit is not defaulted before upgrade.
  3. After reaching v3.4.92 and performing a full factory default, an upgrade directly to v4.50.00 is acceptable.
  4. After the upgrade is completed and the recorder is reprogrammed, it may be beneficial to perform a Database Repair. For details, refer to the section "Database Optimization and Repair" above.
  5. To verify repair progress, you may refer to the HDD status, or search the recorder log for repair started and stopped entries. Note that while the HDD is repairing, new recordings are still being made, but some existing recordings may not be searchable until repair is complete.
  6. If you continue to observe playback issues after database repair, ensure there are no power, network, or motion detection issues. Should the problem persist, contact technical support.

Upgrading from Any v4.X Build to v4.50.00.

  1. Any v4.X build can be upgraded directly to v4.50.00.
  2. Export configuration is highly recommended before performing the upgrade.
  3. If upgrading from any v4.X version that was not v4.22.005, a Database Repair is recommended. Refer to Step 4 and onwards in the previous section.

Downgrading

Downgrading is not recommended. Due to new features and parameters constantly being added, downgrading may cause the NVR to factory default itself or require a manual default to operate properly.

After upgrading to v4.X, the recorder database will need to be converted and optimize. If you are experiencing issues, where playback is expected but not found, please make sure to perform "Database Rebuild" as indicated in the procedures and scenarios below.

Preparing the Upgrade

Before proceeding with upgrade, it is recommend exporting DVR configuration file from the DVR over the network or on to a local USB drive.

Action after firmware upgraded

1. Upgrade the DVR according to the chart above.

2. Reconfirming Channel's Recording Schedule

    - Confirm channel's recording schedule is enable.

    - Check if the channel is on correct recording schedule.

3. Double Check Storage Setting

    - Make sure all channel are assigned to record on its HDD group when the Storage setting is under Group Mode.

4. Perform Database Rebuild locally.

    • Some version above support Database Rebuild via web access - K51 and K72

    • Perform Database Rebuild regardless if system is having any database issue symptom.

    • Database Rebuild process is average ~30 to 60min per TB. The process may still varies depends recording data.

    • After Database Rebuild - Check log to confirm Database Rebuild has went thru properly.

    • If Database Rebuild Started and Stopped log has been log only within few minutes. Database rebuild may not has been completed properly. It is strongly recommend performing the Database Rebuild again.

    • To check log > System > Log > Information > Database Rebuild Started and Stopped.

    • If the log option is not available - access system via SSH can also obtain similar result.

5. Recording Data is still missing after database rebuild process.

If the data has not been recorded or has been overwritten, Database rebuild process is not able retrieve those lost data. Have the system upgraded to the latest available firmware version above to prevent any future data lost is strongly recommended for all application.

In light of the global semiconductor shortage, Hikvision has made some hardware changes to the DS-76xxNI-Q1(2)/P NVRs, also known as “Q series.”

These changes do not have any effect on the performance, specifications, or the user interface of the NVRs. For the ease of reference, these modified units are known as “C-Version” units. This is clearly indicated on the NVR label and on the box by the serial number.

The only difference between the “C-Version” and “non-C-Version” is the firmware. The firmware is not interchangeable:

  • The C-Version NVRs must use firmware version v4.31.102 or higher.
  • The non-C-Version (Q series) NVRs must use firmware version v4.30.085 or older.

Please do not be alarmed if a “Firmware Mismatch” message pops up on the screen during the firmware upgrade. This simply means that the firmware does not match the NVR’s hardware. Simply download the correct firmware and the upgrade will go through without any issue.
