In “What's the Cost of Your Digital Identity?” Security magazine discusses Kaspersky Lab research on how cybercriminals sell and use stolen consumer data.
From the article: “The research revealed that criminals could sell someone’s complete digital life for less than $50, including personal data stolen from social media, bank accounts, gaming websites and more. While many people have heard of, or even fallen victim to, cybercrimes such as data and identity theft, relatively few know the true value of the information that can be stolen.”
Spear phishing or exploiting a software vulnerability are two major ways that cybercriminals steal data.
While the resale value of personal data is not high, cybercriminals can use the stolen information to create problems for consumers, such as incurring debts in the consumer’s name, according to the article.
