Encryption and Authentication Help Mid-Sized Organizations Avoid Security Breach
Hikvision on Multi-Factor Authentication to Reduce Security Concerns, Risk of Breach
Encryption and authentication procedures can help mid-sized organizations as well as enterprises, according to the Security magazine article “Encryption and Authentication: The One-Two Punch That Protects Your Data.”
From the article: “Surviving a data breach can be much more difficult for mid-sized companies. According to the Ponemon Institute’s 2017 State of Cybersecurity in Small & Medium-Sized Businesses report, the average clean-up cost for mid-market companies after being hacked is more than $1 million. In addition to clean-up and containment costs, there may be fines, depending on the industry and jurisdiction the company falls within. A mid-sized business may not have the funds to survive a [security] breach.”
Fifty-three percent of mid-market businesses suffered at least one security breach in the last year, according to the article. Encrypting data makes it more difficult for cyber-attackers to go after data because they need a specific key to access it. Authentication, such as two-factor delivered via text message for example, adds an additional layer to ensure organizations have controlled access for encryption keys, according to the article.

For information about multi-factor authentication, check out this Hikvision blog: “Hikvision Cybersecurity Director on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to Reduce Security Concerns, Lower Risk of Password Being Hacked.” From the article: “MFA adds two or more pieces of verifiable evidence or factors to the authentication process to greatly reduce security concerns by lowering the chances of an account being accessed by the wrong person. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a subset of MFA and is a means of authenticating with just two pieces of verifiable evidence or factors.”
