Hikvision Cybersecurity Director: Avoid Scams and Social Media Phishing this Holiday Season Using These Tips
Hikvision’s director of cybersecurity, Chuck Davis, together with the Hikvision Security Lab at Hikvision headquarters, is leading the cybersecurity program for Hikvision North America, overseeing all internal and external cybersecurity initiatives and programs in the region.
During the holiday season, hackers and other cyber threat actors are more vigilant, preying on user vulnerabilities to create cybersecurity breaches through viruses, malware and scams.
Davis shares tips to help you recognize social media phishing and scams, and avoid being a victim of a cybersecurity attack this holiday season:
- Manual Sharing – Hackers that rely on victims to do the work of sharing the scam by presenting them with intriguing videos, fake offers or messages that they share with their friends. If you don’t recognize the sender, don’t share!
- Fake Offering – These scams invite social network users to join a fake event or group with incentives such as free gift cards. Joining often requires the user to share credentials with the attacker or send a text to a premium rate number.
- Like Jacking – Using fake “Like” buttons, attackers trick users into clicking website buttons that install malware and may post updates on a user’s newsfeed, spreading the attack. If you are not on a recognized site such as Facebook, do not click the “Like” button or share private information with unknown parties.
- Fake Apps – Users are invited to subscribe to an application that appears to be integrated for use with a social network, but is not as described and may be used to steal credentials or harvest other personal data.
If you don’t recognize the offer, platform or person, err on the side of caution and don’t share your information or share with others, says Davis.
