Improving SOCs to Reduce Cyber Risks Such as Breach and Hack

Security Operations Centers (SOCs) are critical to helping companies reduce risks such as breach and hack, and could benefit from improvements, according to the Security magazine article, “New Research Finds Half of SOCs are Ineffective,” which covered results from a Ponemon Institute study.
The Ponemon report, “The Economics of Security Operations Centers,” surveyed IT security experts that work in companies that have an SOC. Seventy-three percent of those surveyed responded that SOCs are crucial to their cybersecurity strategy.
“This study highlighted many of the challenges and perceptions regarding company SOCs, including the substantial impact and cost of personnel for in-house SOCs. Many organizations thus turn to outsourcing, but 58 percent find their MSSPs (managed security service providers) to be either ineffective or only moderately effective. This creates a conundrum that suggests a third-way solution is necessary,” said chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, Larry Ponemon, in the article.
Another challenge of outsourcing is that managed security providers are often twice the cost of in-house staff, according to the study. The high stress environment can also lead to burnout for in-house SOC analysts.
