New Study Finds Organizations have Concerns with Security Operation Centers, Uncovers Most Commonly Identified Exploits
Hikvision Tips to Address Security, Evaluating Partners to Minimize Backdoor Concerns
New research by the Ponemon Institute, “Improving the Effectiveness of the SOC,” found that organizations have security concerns with the effectiveness of Security Operation Centers (SOC), according to an article from Security magazine.
“The top barrier to SOC success, according to 65 percent of respondents, is the lack of visibility into the IT security infrastructure and the top reason for SOC ineffectiveness, according to 69 percent, is lack of visibility into network traffic. On average, less than one-third of the IT security budget is used to fund the SOC and only four percent of respondents say more than 50 percent of the cybersecurity budget will be allocated to the SOC,” from the article.
Other key research findings include:
- 52 percent of respondents confirmed their organization’s IT infrastructure is hosted in the cloud.
- SOC environments most often include monitored and/or managed firewalls as well as intrusion prevention and detection systems.
- 51 percent of survey participants stated their companies invest in threat intelligence feeds.
The article confirmed that “exploits most commonly identified by the SOC are malware attacks, exploits of existing or known vulnerabilities, spear phishing and malicious insiders.” Read more here.

The Hikvision article recommended evaluating partners and stated that “if new partners with less mature security strategies have access to your environment, then hackers will view them as low hanging fruit and use them as a backdoor in.”
