Cisco's new 2019 CISO Benchmark Study shows security professionals are looking at vendor consolidation and cross-team collaboration to reduce security concerns and risk of breach, according to an article in Security magazine.
The reported average cost of security breach is more than $500,000 according to 45 percent of respondents. Fifty percent faced lower costs. Unfortunately, eight percent of study participants reported a “cost of more than $5 million per incident for their most significant breach of the past year.”
From the article: “Complex security environments made up of solutions from 10 or more security vendors could be hampering security professional’s visibility across their environments. Sixty-five percent of respondents do not find it easy to determine the scope of a compromise, contain it and remediate from exploits. The unknown threats that exist outside the enterprise in the form of users, data, devices, and apps is also a top concern for CISOs.”
Other survey findings include:
- Forty-four percent have invested more in security defense technologies
- Thirty-nine percent are focused on risk mitigation strategies
“This year, more than ever, CISOs are taking a much more proactive role in reducing their exposure through consolidation and training, as well as investments in critical technologies, for cyber defense and breach containment, but there is still more to do,” said Steve Martino, senior vice president and chief information security officer for Cisco, in the article.
In the Hikvision blog, “Security Magazine on Creating a Comprehensive Security Strategy to Reduce Concerns, Risk of Breach,” Hikvision’s cybersecurity director provides strategies for preventing malware attack.
One of the tips from that article covers partner evaluation:
- Evaluate and Assess Partners: Use the organization’s internal level of scrutiny to evaluate partners, including digital and cloud service providers. Mallard added “If new partners with less mature security strategies have access to your environment, then hackers will view them as low hanging fruit and use them as a backdoor in.”
