According to an article by Security magazine, many organizations may not be fully prepared for GDPR, increasing security concerns and risk of security breach. On May 25, 2018, Hikvision headquarters, based in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, posted a notice about GDPR compliance on its website.
GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation, is a European Union (EU) legislation that went into effect on May 25, 2018. It provides guidelines for how companies store personal information and data practices. “All companies and organizations that possess or process personal data when doing business in the EU must comply with GDPR,” said the Hikvision notice.
Tips for Complying with GDPR
A study from global technology association CompTIA, referenced in the Security magazine article, stated: "A full 52 percent of 400 U.S. companies surveyed are either still exploring the applicability of GDPR to their business; have determined that GDPR is not a requirement for their business; or are unsure."
According to the article, data security breach is common, and under the GDPR organizations are required to protect personal data from misuse and exploitation, or face penalties.
For companies that need help complying with the GDPR, Security magazine offered these tips:
