Rising Concerns in Healthcare as Report Finds Employees Lack Proper Security Education
Hikvision Covers Security Concerns in Healthcare Cybersecurity Practices
A new report, “The State of Cybersecurity in Healthcare,” found that healthcare organizations in the U.S. and Canada are lacking proper security education and training, creating concerns, according to an article in Security magazine.
“As of January 1, 2019, there have been over 200 hacking/IT-related healthcare organization incidents affecting 500 or more individuals in the U.S. alone, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the number of incidents continues to grow every day. Not only is this a concern for the safety of private patient information, it is also a concern for the industry as breached healthcare providers will spend on average up to $408 per patient to recover their personal healthcare records and up to $1.75 million in advertising to help reverse reputational damages,” from the website.
Additional report findings include:
- 21 percent of respondents were not aware of their company’s cybersecurity policy
- 40 percent were unaware of organizational cybersecurity procedures to protect IT devices
- 18 percent of U.S. respondents did not know what the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) required. Forty-nine percent of Canadian respondents were unaware if patient PHI (Protected Health Information) had to remain in Canada.
