Security Concerns Arise from Employee Errors, Three Industry Cyber Trends
Hikvision Tips to Reduce Security Concerns
A new report, “The State of Industrial Cybersecurity 2019,” found that security concerns caused by unintentional mistakes and employee error accounted for 52 percent of cyber incidents in operational technology and industrial control systems, according to an article in Security magazine.
“The digital transformation of industrial processes shows no sign of slowing over the next five to 10 years, but attitudes, awareness and the risks associated with industrial cybersecurity in operational technology (OT) are constantly changing,” from the report.
Three influential industry trends detailed in the study include:
- New technologies require data to be transmitted to and processed in the cloud have created more potential vulnerabilities beyond manager control.
- A significant rise in specialty cyber insurance policies to hedge the possible costs of a breach or other incident. “Typically, these are designed to cover costs for responding to and investigating attacks, as well as damages incurred. Many policies are currently untested, however, and areas of coverage may be unclear,” said the report.
- The shortage of cybersecurity specialists worldwide has increased the challenges related to protecting vulnerable systems.
The article also identified that 26 percent of vulnerabilities within industrial control systems are caused by vulnerabilities, patches and updates. Attackers find entry through remote operations, vendors, and malware infection, as well as several other entry points.
