SecurityInfoWatch.com on Cybersecurity Tasks to Deter Cyber Threats, Prevent Security Breach
Hikvision Discusses Network Security and Segmentation to Reduce Security Concerns
In the SecurityInfoWatch.com article, “The most disregarded cybersecurity tasks that can cost you,” the author outlines several key tasks organizations can take to be proactive and avoid becoming a victim of security breach.
From the article: “Every company is at risk for a cyberattack regardless of size and industry. In fact, more than 53 percent of companies experienced at least one cyberattack in the last 12 months. The best thing a CEO and other senior leadership can do is enforce cybersecurity training at all levels by assigning resources to cybersecurity processes, tools and anything else necessary. This ensures a decreased response time when attacks do occur and lowered impact on business operations.”
The article also stated that ransomware malware attacks are becoming a more common cyberattack method by hackers, growing more than 350 percent annually.
Tips to Reduce Cyberattack
The article outlined several tips to reduce the risk of cyberattack, including the following:
- Prioritize cybersecurity as an organization-wide initiative. Executive leadership can implement KPIs that track the effectiveness of cyber efforts.
- Monitor employee behavior. “Seventy percent of cyber incidents are a result of internal vulnerabilities, so managers have a particularly important role in monitoring any suspicious activity,” according to the article.
- Remove stale accounts from various cloud services when an employee leaves the company to ensure they do not continue to have access to this information.
- Limit employee access to sensitive data based on roles.
The author added that the “best cybersecurity plan can fail if it impedes business operations or is otherwise difficult to implement. Security professionals should look into what processes can be automated to make it less time-consuming for end users.”

Hikvision on Network Security and Segmentation
In the Hikvision blog, “Cybersecurity at Home: Hikvision Cybersecurity Director Talks Network Security and Network Segmentation,” Hikvision cybersecurity director Chuck Davis offered insights to reduce security concerns, and why network segmentation should be used at home. Below is an excerpt from the blog.
Network segmentation is a simple concept that has been used by network administrators for decades, but only recently have we seen a real need to apply this concept in the home. There are a number of contributing factors:
- The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices being added to home networks.
- The various levels of experience, support, and cybersecurity “baked into” these devices.
- The high bandwidth needs of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, plus all of the additional IoT devices, is putting a strain on older home firewalls/routers.
Davis discussed how smartphones changed the landscape. “Wi-Fi phones became prevalent and, in many situations, doubled the number of computers connected to the home router. Next came smart TVs, smart light bulbs, smart refrigerators, and the age of the IoT. According to a 2017 study, North Americans have an average of 13 devices per person. That means a family of four has an average of 52 devices on their network. That may seem high, but most Americans don’t realize how much their home network has grown over the past 10 to 15 years, and they don’t realize that all of those “things” are actually computers. All of these devices have a network interface, storage, memory, processors and an operating system. Additionally, they are always connected to the Internet and are rarely patched,” said Davis, in the article.
