UK Password Survey Finds Security Concerns: Majority Use Same Password for Some or All Online Accounts
Hikvision Rules for Creating Good Passwords, Using Password Managers, to Reduce Security Concerns
In “Lack of Password Security Practices, UK Survey Finds,” Security magazine outlines password concerns from a Bilendi survey of more than 1,000 UK residents, conducted on behalf of European email services company GMX. The survey found that “more than 64 percent of people use the same password for some, or even all, of their online accounts.”
“It’s important for everyone to take the security of their email accounts seriously, as these are at the center of our digital lives. Once hackers have access to your email account they can quickly take over the rest of your digital accounts by using it to reset all your passwords. Many of these accounts store your credit card or banking information. Moreover hackers are getting very creative at finding new ways to extract money from victims,” said Jan Oetjen, managing director of GMX, in GMX survey coverage on Helpnetsecurity.com.
Additional findings from the survey include:
- 21 percent of respondents use personal information for password creation, such as birthdays or their pet’s name.
- 43 percent stated they were overwhelmed by the total number of passwords they had to remember.
- Only eight percent used a password manager to manage their passwords. “Forty percent say that they ‘remembered’ their passwords, followed by 20 percent who prefer to write them down on a piece of paper,” according to the article.
