Report Uncovers Cybercrime Caused by Small, Powerful Threat Groups

Secureworks’ 2018 State of Cybercrime Report uncovered that “a small subset of professional criminal actors is responsible for the bulk of cybercrime-related damage” using sophisticated tools and techniques, according to an article by Security magazine.
“Cybercrime is a lucrative industry, and it’s not surprising it’s become the arm of powerful, organized groups. To understand the complete picture of the cybercriminal world, we developed insights based on a combination of dark web monitoring and client brand surveillance with automated technical tracking of cybercriminal toolsets,” said Don Smith, senior director at Secureworks Counter Threat Unit, in the article.
Additional research findings from the report include:
- Ransomware—a type of malware—continues to be a threat. The article added that there “has been no significant decrease in the volume of ransomware, banking malware, point-of-sale (POS) memory scrapers or other threats available for purchase on underground forums.”
- Criminal gangs with sophisticated tools have used social engineering and point-of-sale (POS) malware to earn millions via stolen payment card data.
- Sophisticated criminals avoid the dark web when possible to avoid detection.
