Study Uncovers Negative Impact Social Media Can Have on Data Security Breach Announcements
Hikvision Cybersecurity Center, Best Practices, Offer Insights to Address Security Concerns
In the Security magazine piece, “Social Media Exposure Can Exacerbate the Negative Impact of a Data Breach,” a study led by researchers at Dublin City University (DCU) found that social media can worsen the impact of data security breach announcements including an upsurge in the cost of these breaches, according to the article.
The study reviewed security breaches at publicly traded U.S. companies over a four-year period, with a primary focus on Twitter. It uncovered that when a security breach is disclosed via the organization’s Twitter account, negative effects are pronounced.
From the article: “The study also found that timely communication and disclosure of a breach can reduce the potential harm for firms that have low-visibility with traditional media like newspapers. The impact for these firms is positive as social media offers them an effective channel to disseminate information that cannot be disseminated through more established channels.”
