Hikvision Writes About California as First State in US that Banned Use of Default Passwords, Offers Three Tips for Creating Good Passwords
The SecurityInfoWatch.com (SIW) article, “How to create a sustainable cybersecurity approach for industrial IoT,” outlined the explosive growth of IoT devices and provided insights to reduce security concerns by establishing sustainable IoT cyber practices.
“The nature of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the scale of their use is what makes securing them so hard. IoT devices emerged for industrial controls two decades ago and then expanded rapidly into business and consumer technologies,” said the article.
It is estimated that total IoT connected devices worldwide are at more than 23 billion. Cyberattacks on these devices have grown in recent years, as well as sophistication in the methods of attack. Password policy for device security has received the attention of the legislature seeking ways to improve these cyber practices. From the article, “The poor password practice situation has been so serious for both consumer and industrial IoT devices that California has passed a law that bans default passwords for all IoT devices.”
Hikvision wrote about this legislation in the blog “California One of First US States that Banned Use of Default Passwords for IoT Devices.” It requires that default passwords be unique to each device, or that the user must be prompted to change the default prior to using the product.
