New Study Finds Cyberattacks Grew in First Half of 2019
Hikvision Tips to Prevent Malware, Cyberattack
A new study by cybersecurity provider F-secure found that cyberattacks such as malware grew in 2019 when compared with the same period in 2018, according to the article “Cyberattacks on IoT and SMBs Rapidly Increasing” in Security magazine.
F-Secure’s global honeypot network measured more than 2.9 billion cyber events in the first half of 2019, according to the article.
"Our honeypots are decoy servers that we’ve set up in countries around the world to gauge trends and patterns in what’s going on in the global cyberattack landscape. We’ve configured them to look like actual servers, inviting the type of traffic that hits actual servers. Honeypots are highly effective tools for collecting information on the methods and target selection processes used by modern attackers. They can also be a good source of malware samples and shell scripts,” from the report.
Additional report findings include:
- 760 million events were measured on the Telnet protocol which is used by IoT devices.
- The most common ransomware was remote desktop protocol (31 percent of incidents).
- Malware from honeypots is primarily Mirai, which began in 2016 and targets IoT devices such as IP cameras and routers.
