Report Finds Remote Desktop Protocol is Top Hacker Tool Used to Exploit Network
Hikvision Tips to Prevent Exploits and Account Hacks
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a top hacker tool used to exploit a network and introduce malicious software, according to the “2019 Spotlight Report on RDP” covered in the Security magazine article, “90 Percent of Organizations Exhibit Malicious Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Behaviors.”
IT administrators use RDP to centrally control remote systems and it “is an even more vital tool for managed service providers (MSPs) in their management of hundreds of client networks and systems, notes the report,” according to Security magazine.
From the article: “In September 2018, the FBI warned that the malicious use of RDP “has been on the rise since mid-late 2016," says the report. The FBI also reported that several high-profile ransomware attacks, such as Samsam and CrySiS, utilized RDP to laterally move inside of networks. Data from the report shows that 90 percent of the organizations exhibited some form of malicious RDP behaviors between January-June 2019.”
Additional report findings include:
- More than 26,000 suspicious RDP behaviors were detected.
- The top three at-risk industries for RDP detections include manufacturing, finance/insurance, and retail.
