Malware, Security Concerns, Rise During 2019 Thanksgiving Shopping Season
Cyber Tips from Hikvision to Avoid Security Concerns This Holiday Shopping Season
Malware spiked 63 percent during 2019’s Thanksgiving shopping season, specifically “between the eight-day holiday shopping window from Nov. 25 to Dec. 2,” creating security concerns for retailers, according to an article in Security magazine.
The research, from cybersecurity provider SonicWall, also found:
- A 51 percent increase in phishing attacks on Black Friday, when compared with an average day during 2019.
- Malware and ransomware attacks grew on Black Friday 2019 compared to the same day in 2018.
- Cyber Sunday 2019 saw increases in malware of 107 percent and ransomware at 9 percent.
Research also discovered malicious Android apps. From the SonicWall website: “To diversify their attack strategies, cybercriminals and malware writers use this opportunity to spread malware under the guise of shopping and deal-related apps—particularly during this eight-day Thanksgiving holiday shopping window. In the past few weeks alone, SonicWall Capture Labs threat researchers observed a number of malicious Android apps that use the shopping theme to trick users into downloading and installing these apps. One of the more notable malicious apps is this Amazon Shopping Hack, which is tied to a range of survey scams that attempt to steal user data and sensitive information.”
