Security Concerns & Vulnerability Exploits: Top 5 Cybersecurity Threats Outlined
Hikvision Senior Cybersecurity Director on Cyber Threats, Zero-Day Vulnerability Exploits
Cyber threats are increasing in sophistication and leading to growth in security concerns and vulnerability exploits. The Security magazine article, “5 biggest cybersecurity threats: How hackers utilize remote work and human error to steal corporate data,” highlights the top cybersecurity issues facing organizations.
Social engineering is one of the top cybersecurity concerns listed in the article.
In another recent Security magazine story, social engineering is described as, “a non-technical strategy that relies on human interaction and often involves deceiving people into breaching standard security practices, that will only increase in the new year.” The blog goes on to say, “Social engineering often involves common attacks such as phishing emails, which are fraudulent communications attempting to get a user to disclose confidential information or click a link that could install malware.”
The Security magazine article found that one-third of 2020’s security breaches used social engineering and 90 percent of tactics used involved phishing.
Another big cyber threat is ransomware, “a data-encrypting program that demands payment to release the infected data.” Ransomware is the most popular kind of malware found in data breaches, with damages reaching into the millions of dollars in 2020.
Vulnerabilities related to cloud computing are getting the attention of hackers. And “while the pandemic lasts, the economy also witnessed a 50 percent increase in cloud use across all industries,” said the article. The pandemic has also fueled growth in attempted security breaches.
